Speed Makes Sales

The stats show it all, website speed not only dramatically increases page views but increases sales. 47% of consumers expect a web page to load in less than 2 seconds, not only that but a one second delay could result in a 7% reduction in conversions!

As a matter of fact, 75% of people would leave and not return to websites that took longer than 4 seconds to load and 40% would abandon the page if it takes more than 3 seconds. So why settle for a slow site, it’s costing you.

At IT Software we take speed seriously, so here are some ways to improve your site speed:

Minify your code

Minification involves removing all unnecessary data such as line breaks, comments and rewriting code to be shorter. All HTML, CSS and JavaScript code should be minified. For automatic minification you can use tools such as Will Peavy’s HTML Minifier, Andy Chilton’s CSS Minifier and Vance Lucas’ jscompress.

Avoid bad requests

No one likes a 404! So make sure your website doesn’t call any content that doesn’t exist otherwise you’ll have wasted requests, slowing page rendering overall :( To check if you are calling any content that doesn’t exist you can use tools like the Chrome Developer Tools or Firefox Developer Tools.

Reduce the number of requests

Every time your site makes a request (whether it be images, css or something else entirely) your site slows down while it waits to load the content. By reducing the amount of requests (through combining scripts, using sprites or excluding certain content) you’ll see dramatic increases in the way your website performs!

Serve optimised content

Did you know that images typically contain a large amount of redundant data? If images can be resized and optimised (using a service such as TinyPNG) you could reduce the size of the image by 90% without lose of quality!

Compress served content

Finally, ensure that your web server is serving compressed content using gzip (which can again reduce file sizes by 90%). Different web servers are configured differently, for Apache you can use mod_deflate by adding it to your .htaccess, Nginx can use ngx_http_gzip_module in your nginx.conf file.

Let IT Software take care of it for you

Sit back and relax while IT Software not only completes all of the outlined steps above but ensures that your website is as fast as we can possibly make it by leveraging a world wide CDN, ensuring all code is optimised and critically evaluating all requests!
